MTA poster deadline change

Apparently Queens College is taking delivery of laptops and tablet(?) for students who do not have access to such devices at home or elsewhere. Please let your students know that if this situation applies to them, they should email ( CTLOnline@qc.cuny.edu ) to enquire about availability.  Please all look here for student resources  that will help with internet access. Since there was a recent change to the school calendar  and spring break I am changing the MTA poster deadline. If you would like feedback for your revised sketch with color please send by April 2. Otherwise the full color final poster will be due on April 6. After that you will have a new project to work on. Please color jpegs under 10mb via email. some of you are sending huge files. Please send large files with a downloadable link. Also name your files. For example send a file named  poster_sketch_name.jpeg  or poster_final_name.jpeg I should have gotten back to everyone now about their ske...

You can work in portrait or landscape orientation. Make sure it is a standard print size. Examples: 11x17, 12x16, 18x24, 24x36. You’ll be working in full-bleed. Be sure to include an extra 1/4-inch all the way around your piece. You can work in any medium, including digital. Due Nov. 25 1. Thumbnails showing your thought process 2. A sketch of your final illustration. Your composition should show that you are thinking about foreground, middle ground, and background. Due Dec. 2 1. A tightly rendered, full-sized drawing of your final illustration. All of your line work should be close to final. Homework upload for digital illustrations

For those of you working digitally ... I've created a Dropbox folder for digital homework and shared it with all of you. The notification should have arrived in your email via Dropbox.  Here's a direct link:  https://www.dropbox.com/home/Arts%20259%20homework%20upload In addition to showing a printout, drop your digital file into this folder before the critique. We'll all be able to look at it together during the critique—in addition to your printout—and I'll grade your work according to the digital file, not the printout. (I realize that those of you working in larger sizes may not be able to print at that size. It's ok. I'll be able to see the true size of your work in the file.)  Here are the parameters I'd like to see for every digital homework file : - 300dpi - Full-size dimensions, as requested in the assignment (meaning, for this assignment, if you are working on a 10 x 9-inch page + a .25-inch bleed then I want your digita...

Homework Assignment #6: Children’s Illustration

Image
Choose a scene from your favorite children's book (or just a children's book you really like) and create a new illustration. It can be any scene you choose from the book. It should reflect your own interpretation of the scene, a completely new illustration based on the author's text for that page. You should redesign the characters, the environment, everything. Just make sure you don't contradict anything in the author's text. My hope is that you'll have access to a physical book for reference for the full two weeks. Make sure you are familiar with the text. You’ll need to read the book in order to gather information about the characters and the world, and to choose your scene. DUE Nov. 11: From the thumbnails we started in class, sketch the page you'll be recreating, at full size, and include lines to indicate trim size, gutter, and bleed (an extra 0.25 inches all the way around your art).  If your art is not full-bleed then I still want to see the ble...

Sketchbook Assignments 10/21 – 11/25

Due October 28 "Odd Couples" — Draw a minimum of 3 odd couples: 1 animal couple, 1 plant couple, and 1 inanimate couple (inanimate meaning not alive: like a toaster or a rock). Exaggerate physical differences through proportion and shape. Due November 4 "Present, Past, Future" — Create a human character and imagine how he/she will look over a span of 50–60 years. Draw 3 full-body portraits of this person in your style, spanning child, adult, and senior citizen. Think about how faces and bodies age in ways that preserve or even enhance their personalities. Due November 11 "Monsters/Creatures" — Draw your personal interpretation of 2 monsters from mythology. You can choose from any type of mythology you're interested in. Include a sentence or two from your research, discussing the monster's origin, habitat, history, or any powers it may possess. For Monday, Oct 28 — Homework / Sketchbook / in-class materials to bring

Homework: Since there was some confusion about last week's MTA poster assignment, you'll have until Monday, October 28, to complete it. Refer to Diana's previous blog post, "Homework #5," for all assignment details. If you feel you are already finished then you're done. If the sketch you brought to class on Monday, Oct 21, did not include ALL OF THE ELEMENTS Diana assigned then now is your chance to fix that. If your sketch included all of the elements but you would like to improve your sketch before it's graded, then this is an opportunity to do that. I'll be sending images of all of your sketches to Diana. We will take photos of what is on the wall during class, and if you prefer to send her a digital file there will be time for you to email those to me during class. ----- Sketchbook assignment: "Odd Couples" — Draw a minimum of 3 odd couples: 1 animal couple, 1 plant couple, 1 inanimate couple ("inanimate" meaning not...

Homework Assignment #5

Homework Assignment #5 Subway poster Due 10/21 Here’s a refresh of what your homework is. Below is the premise.  An art director from the MTA has just emailed you. The client has said they love your work and would like you to submit a pitch for a MTA subway poster (The horizontal art cards you see above the subway windows). Your task is to create a fully realized sketch of your idea for the client as a pitch.  Include some color ideas with color swatches or add some loose color to an area of the sketch. You can try scanning in an area and adding some digital color. Or trace a section of your sketch and try a color test with traditional materials.  The sketch can be full size or slightly smaller. See the dimensions below. I recommend drawing the sketch at 75% or larger.
